What we do

Each year, the Europe Region WAGGGS organizes a number of activities based on the Operational Plan approved by the European Guide Conference.

Seminars and training events

Each year, the Europe Region organizes a number of seminars, workshops or tailored events.  These trainings are designed to help the general development of associations on issues like membership, leaders’ training, or to provide specific strategic support.  They are a place where associations can exchange experiences and develop partnerships to help their future work. Some events are also planned jointly with the WOSM European Region and we already have an exciting programme for 2010.  Details of all our events can be found in the 2010 overview.

The Europe Region is also involved in several Networks.

The North-South and Overture Networks provide open forums to national Guide and Scout Associations interested and active in the field of co-operation and development education and working with minorities.  These two networks meet twice yearly for the exchange of information and experiences.  For future meetings see the Seminar and Events Overview or check the calendar below.

The Growth Network meetings are organized jointly between WAGGGS and WOSM to share best practices and ideas about membership growth and to create a peer network across Europe with input from associations around the different growth factors. Currently the Growth Network meets twice a year.  Each meeting focuses on different aspects relating to membership growth and invitations are circulated through Europak.

We also organize events for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in the Europe Region.

Roverway 2009More than 3000 young people from 41 countries participated at Roverway 2009, which ended on 28 July after a week of workshops and activities. From the opening ceremony to the journeys, the workshops and activities at the Althingi, the participants learned how to "Open Up" to culture and creativity, challenge and the environment, and to understand what contribution they can make to create a better world.

Roverway2009, the third edition of the event for young people aged 16 to 22, was organized by the Icelandic Boy and Girl Scout Association, on behalf of the Europe Region WAGGGS and WOSM European Region.

Centenary banner

The centenary celebrations of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting kicked of in Europe with eurolife.03 over the New Year, with 70 Guides and Scouts meeting in Germany. Not only did the participants celebrate the beginning of WAGGGS Centenary celebrations, but they also experienced challenge and adventure through outdoor activities and they learnt about the UN Millennium Development Goals and how they can help change the world.  Read more about this event and find out how Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting has changed lives in Europe.

Long term thematic projects

The Europe Region WAGGGS has been awarded a grant from the European Commission – Directorate General Freedon, Security and Justice under the programme “Fundamental Rights and Citizenship” in order to implement an eighteen months project on anti-discrimination. “The Right to be Part of the Solution” project aims at promoting fundamental rights, intercultural learning and interfaith dialogue. The Project began in January 2009 and activities will continue to take place until the end of the project in June 2010 including a toolkit on anti-discrimination.

Publications

The Europe Region has produced a number of documents for associations to help their development. Toolkits containing information and practical advice have been produced on a variety of subjects such as educational programme and training, recruitment and retention, advocacy, child protection and including young people with disabilities in Guiding and Scouting. We have produced guidelines to help associations to develop partnerships at national and local level and a Charter on Gender to examine the role gender plays in their association.
