Development of the movement:
Scouting started in 1912 and latest research shows that there were Girl Guides units in Turkey as early as 1912. After the foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923, Girl Guiding spread to several schools over the country. In 1936, the Directorate of Scouting and Guiding was founded. This Directorate acted as the central governing body for both Guides and Scouts.
In 1968 the Association became a joint association, and in 1991, the joint association turned into a Federation: the Scouting and Girl Guiding Federation of Turkey.
In the Federation women and men have equal voting rights and a balanced representation.
There are girl only units and some mixed units in the Association depending on the interests and needs of the young people. No matter what type of unit, the needs and development of girls and young women, and the spirit and fundamental principles of Girl Guiding are emphasised.
Programme:
The programme emphasizes the spiritual and moral values of Guiding as outlined in the Promise and Law and has been recently updated to meet the changing needs of young women and girls. New age sections have been formed in order to include university students and pre-school children. Sea Scouting and Air Scouting has also been revised and interest in this is spreading.
The programme has reached young people in orphanages and juvenile prisons and units have started in these institutions. People with special needs are also welcomed into the Association.
The educational programme is called a ‘golden wheel’ and has eight areas: Citizenship; Health; Skills; Outdoors; Be prepared; Relations; Character; Effectiveness. After renewing the programme, books and materials for young people and adults have been produced.
Through the programme, girls and young women are given the same opportunities as boys and young men in decision making and all other areas.
Relationship to society:
Several campaigns have been organised to meet the needs of the community such as helping in natural disasters like floods and earthquakes, and helping immigrants. Smiling Future was one project developed to help children and young people who had survived the earthquake in the northern part of Turkey. Rescue teams composed of Girl Guides and Boy Scouts have been set up ready to be of service should the need arise and they were very efficient during the recent earthquakes. The Girl Guides and Scouts of Turkey have received awards for this work: E.C Youth Award – Active Young Citizens, UNHCR Award for the Project GOP- From Bosnia-Herzekova to Kosova, and the Lions Youth Year Service Award.
Communication and Co-operation
There is good cooperation between the Association and the Boy Scouts and other NGOs and the media. The Association has good relations with the United Nations, UNHCR, Lions, Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association and International Coastal Clean Up.
During the International Year of Volunteers, Turkish Guides and Scouts took part in a TV series made by UN volunteers along with 49 other organizations chosen from 26,000.
Besides the newsletter, communication is being introduced through the website. The Federation has its own website: www.izcilikfederasyonu.org.
Training:
The Training scheme has been revised to fit the renewed programme. The training courses are as follows:
Introductory Seminar (2 days)
Basic course (7 days)
Specialized seminars for leaders of different age sections
Woodbadge
Training of Trainers
Training courses are also organized to meet any need that may arise. Training is carried out by voluntary and professional trainers.
Outdoor and Environmental Activities
Girl Guides have been participating in the ‘Clean Up the World’ campaign for ten years and have started to take part in International Coastal Clean Up activities and received a letter of appreciation from the Coastal Clean Up President.
