Development of the movement:
When Boy Scouting was introduced to San Marino in 1973, the benefits the Movement offered to young people were apparent. With the help of the Associazione Guide E Scouts Cattolici Italiani (AGESCI) a Girl Guide unit, made up of a Guide Patrol and a Brownie Circle, was opened in 1974. Soon after, the merged Association, now known as Associazione Guide Esploratori Cattolici Sammarinesi (AGECS) was set up. From 1974 to 1987 all Guides were part of WAGGGS through AGESCI, paying their quota to WAGGGS through the Italian Association.
Guiding continued to grow, and in 1976 a mixed Ranger/Rover group was opened and in 1977 the Brownies and Cubs joined together to form a mixed group. In 1987 an Agreement of Co-operation was signed between AGESCI and AGECS allowing AGECS members to wear AGESCI uniform, use its publications, and follow its training programme. Expansion in San Marino continued with more units being introduced in 1988. Guiding is now found in all areas of the Republic.
Programme:
The Assembly of Leaders in San Marino draws up the programme used by the Association. The programme’s objective is to help its members develop as worthwhile citizens of the country and community. Activities are based on the spiritual dimension, outdoor life, physical development, handicrafts and service.
The girls are given several choices and are free to select activities according to their specific interests
Relationship to society:
Rangers take part in community development and service projects. Guides provide services by helping with civil defence, keeping order at the Olympic Games for the disabled, and cleaning up the slopes of Mount Titano.
Communication and Co-operation
The Association is widening its horizons by participating in various activities organized by other National Organizations. Guides and Scouts are well integrated into the community and their public image is good. The Association enjoys good relationships with the national Government and religious authorities, has contacts with other youth groups, and is represented on the National Youth Committee.
AGECS co-operates in the preparation of Il Foglio, a periodical produced for leaders in the Rimini area
Training:
The Leaders Assembly appoints Guide and Scout representatives to be responsible for training for a period of three years. Following the agreement made with AGESCI in 1987, the members of the AGECS work closely with this Association and participate in all training activities organized by the Emilia Romagna region.
Outdoor and Environmental Activities
The Roman Catholic Church has given the Association a campsite in Ca’Borgo.
