The age groups vary among the component Associations. This grouping is the most common.

Development of the movement:

Guiding began in San Sebastián in 1929, and soon afterwards groups of Guides appeared elsewhere in the country, including Zaragoza, Valencia and

Madrid. Activities were organized and co-ordinated by the Asociación de las Guías de España.

In Catalonia Guiding started in 1932, the Germanor de Noies Guides developing along similar lines to the Asociación de las Guías de España. Guide companies were quickly formed, followed by Brownie packs and a Ranger section.

During the Civil War (1936-1939) all Guiding ceased in Spain and it was not until 1947 that activities were restarted. By 1955, Guiding had developed throughout the country and the Guides joined to form the Federación Guías de España. In 1962 the Federation was replaced by the Comité de Enlace del Guidismo en España/Comitè d’Enllaç del Guiatge a Espanya (CEGE).

From 1984 the CEGE was made up of two federations: the Federació Catalana d’Escoltisme i Guiatge, active in the Catalonian territory, and which had 7,000 members (90%); and the Federación Española de Guidismo, active in the rest of the Spaniard Estate, and which had 700 numbers (10%). The CEGE aims to maintain mutual aid and co-operation between its two federations.

Programme:

The programme used in Spain varies according to the characteristics of each component Association. Both federations have a mixed membership of boys and girls, and share the aim of promoting equal educational opportunities for both sexes.

In the Catalonian case, the whole Guiding movement is also Scout, and the programme reflects joint Guide-Scout objectives.

Some Associations base their activities on five fundamental points: adventure, team life, nature, development and commitment. They all encourage girls to serve those around them, to make a commitment to their own community, and to seek higher spiritual values.

One of the most important aims of CEGE is to develop Guiding in Spain according to the cultural affinities of members in different regions. At the CEGE Annual Assembly, representatives of both Federations evaluated the progress of Guiding in Spain, and revised the working names.

Relationship to society:

Guides in Spain are active in the field of community service. Some have worked with gypsies, helping a group of about 50 girls to become self-reliant, to work together with team spirit and to develop a sense of responsibility. Members have also helped people to settle in their new community when moving from one area of the country to another.

Communication and Co-operation

Brochures have been produced to explain and publicize the Movement. The component Associations publish magazines for their members including the bi-monthly magazine, Prisma, and the quarterly magazines Rastro and El Correu de Llúria 7; and thrice-yearly L’Eina, plus the fact sheet Escoltes Catalans, designed for parents.

Training:

Regular training meetings are organized at national level for Branch and Unit Leaders.

Outdoor and Environmental Activities

Members attend regular camps on varied themes such as leadership training and winter sports. Guides in Spain are involved in many environmental projects.

Escoltes Catalans started co-operating with the Third World in 1989, and have carried out projects in Africa, in coordination with African Associations. The Escoltes Catalans are part of COFRASL (French Conference of Lay Associations). At present, the Association continues its work for the environment, through its nature team, aged 16-25. Active work is also being carried out through the Fourth World team, helping with poverty bags in Barcelona.
