Development of the movement:
Between 1913 and 1916 nine groups of Girl Guides were formed independently in different parts of Switzerland. In 1919 these groups joined together to become one Association, the Fédération des Eclaireuses Suisses (FESes). A major change took place in 1987 when the Fédération des Eclaireuses Suisses and the Scout Association, Fédération des Eclaireurs Suisses, merged together to become the Mouvement Scout de Suisse (Swiss Guide and Scout Movement).
Programme:
One of the main objectives of the Mouvement Scout de Suisse is the formulation of a programme suitable for each branch, with personal development playing a key role. Whenever possible, members with special needs are integrated into packs and companies, although separate groups do exist.
Relationship to society:
Rover activities are based mainly on service and the study of social problems. The lower age groups give help and service wherever they are needed. Service is given in hospitals and institutions throughout the year, and service camps are organized regularly, especially in the Calanca Valley.
Integration of Immigrant Children
Switzerland’s population has a large percentage (20%) of immigrants. This number is not reflected in the membership of the Movement as almost no immigrant children have joined in Switzerland. Therefore a project has been started to attract and retain more immigrant children and help train leaders on work to work with them. The programme is being developed from outside and inside the Association.
Communication and Co-operation
The Swiss Guide and Scout Movement encourages international contacts and exchanges. Each year an increasing number of members go abroad or receive guests from other countries. Development projects, the latest in Burkina Faso and Romania, have helped to promote mutual international understanding.
The first camp of the European Region: Eurolife 01 was organised by the Swiss Guides and Scouts. Over 1000 Guides and Scouts followed rivers ‘upstream’ (this was the motto of the Camp) and spent an unforgettable week in the Swiss Alps.
The Swiss Guide and Scout Movement is a member of the National Youth Council, which has consultative status with the Government. In addition, the Movement plays an active role in various consultative groups, where it regularly co-operates with other youth organizations which have similar goals. The Movement keeps close contacts with former Guides and Scouts who are members of the national parliament.
Training:
Many leaders in Switzerland are young, aged 17-30, and so training is very important. Advanced training is carried out at national level. Training structures are regularly revised and adapted to meet the news of new trainers.
Outdoor and Environmental Activities
Company camps take place in tents in summer in the mountains and in autumn at lower levels. In winter many companies have skiing camps. Hiking and cycling are also popular with older members.
